Student Opinion of Teaching Surveys

Many of you may have been told by your instructors or seen banners and ads about how important it is to complete your Student Opinion of Teaching Surveys or OMETs.  You may also have been asking yourself “What are OMETs?” or “How do I take the survey?”  The Office of Measurement & Evaluation of Teaching (OMET) administers surveys on behalf of instructors.  Over the years, Student Opinion of Teaching Surveys have come to be referred to as “OMETs” by many Pitt faculty.  Regardless of what they are called, teaching surveys are an important part of each academic term.

Why should you complete the survey?  Instructors value your feedback; they want to hear from you.  They may be gathering feedback about changes they made to their course or some may be looking for new ideas.  Administrators use the data to review course offerings and make decisions about rehires or promotions.  Results are anonymous and your instructor won’t see the results until after final grades are posted.

Now that you know how important it is to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback you will need to access the survey link.  This can be done three different ways.  You will receive emails for each class survey you are being asked to complete, the survey link appears in the email.  The survey links will also appear on your CourseWeb landing page.  If you have been told by your instructor to expect a survey and have not received an email or don’t see the link on your CourseWeb landing page, complete a Report a Problem form and someone from OMET will be in touch.  Finally, you can find the surveys by clicking on the “Academic Resources” menu item at the top of the my.pitt.edu portal.  This will pull up a new page, and you can access your surveys by clicking on the “OMET Teaching Survey” link on the right hand side.

Go to Student Information for additional information about Student Opinion of Teaching Surveys.
